On June 9, 1948, Jim Buckels was born in Iowa. Jim Buckels developed, with his mother’s encouragement, an early attraction to fantasy, storybook images. At the age of eighteen, Jim won an art competition and received a full scholarship to the University of Northern Iowa. In 1968, his education was interrupted to serve two years with the army in Vietnam. When he returned to the United States he continued his education and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in art. He found work as a freelance illustrator for a design firm.
Jim Buckels’ artwork combines flat, rich colors and very fine detail, while using airbrush and acrylic paints to masterfully create compositions. The magical qualities of his paintings seem to offer the viewer an opportunity to enter into a storybook, fantastical world.
Buckels is known best for his skewed perspective, which creates a world of both real and imaginary landscapes. As a contemporary artist, Buckels continues to captivate viewers into his magical realm.
