In 1944, David Lee was born in Canton, China and two years later his family moved to Hong Kong, where he was raised. David began painting at four years old. Although Lee was artistically talented at a very young age, his father urged him to enter the field of medicine. As a dutiful son, David majored for three years in medical studies before receiving his father's approval to pursue a career in art. "My father and I struck a bargain," Lee relates. "If I could win the Chinese National Painting Competition, he would honor my wishes. I did and he did." David Lee is still the youngest artist who has won the prestigious Chinese National Painting Competition.
David Lee attended Taiwan University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts. He also attended the Far East Academy of Art in Hong Kong and the Kaoshung University in Taiwan.
David later moved to Hawaii to devoted himself to his artwork full-time. Throughout his career, Lee has had numerous solo exhibitions throughout the world including the United States, Canada, Japan, France, Germany, Switzerland, and Taiwan. His paintings also hang in the permanent collection of the Taiwan University, the National Museum of Taiwan, and the Chuk-Yun Museum in Hong Kong. David Lee’s art is shown worldwide in more than three hundred art galleries, universities, and museums, as well as many private collections including the Imperial Family of Japan’s collection.
