In 1951, Simon Okshteyn was born in the town of Chernovitz, Ukraine in what was then the U.S.S.R. Okshteyn's began studying art very young. Even at an early age he had tremendous artistic promise and was accepted into the renowned Odessa Art Academy. In 1973, Simon graduated from Odessa Art Academy with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
From 1972 to 1979 Simon Okshteyn participated in many exhibitions in major museums and public galleries in the Soviet Union. In the spring of 1980, he immigrated to the United States to Springfield, Massachusetts and later moved to New York City. Okshteyn was captivated by the amazing diversity of life offered in America. Adjusting to a new environment, Okshteyn's art went through an extraordinary transformation of style.
Simon Okshteyn's upbringing from Russia is present in the exotica in his art. His aptitude and wit for social commentary are qualities that are translated into his art producing unique work. Simonís conceptual and artistic innovations paired with bold colors and provocative forms place him among the most successful artists of today.
